Thriving in the Gaps: The "Agility" Playbook of Chinese SMEs in Southern Europe

Duration: Nov 19 - 21, 2025
Location: Spain
The annual Southern European energy, power, and lighting showcase – the Spanish International Lighting, Electrical, and Power Exhibition (GENERA & MATELEC) – concluded successfully from November 18-20, 2025, at the Madrid International Exhibition Centre. Focusing on smart lighting, intelligent energy, and green transition, the event brought together over 800 exhibitors globally, presenting a comprehensive range of innovations across the entire industry chain, from power generation and transmission to end-use electricity consumption. Serving as a vital bridge to the Southern European market, the exhibition also offered a unique window into the global expansion strategies of small and medium-sized Chinese electrical enterprises.

Southern Europe's Energy Shift: "Custom Agility" from China Wins Buyer Favor

Driven by the EU's target of 45% renewable energy by 2030, Spain and other Southern European nations are heavily investing in grid modernization and new energy infrastructure. The exhibition attracted tens of thousands of professional buyers from over 60 countries, with a notable increase in attendance from utility companies, EPC contractors, and distributors within Spain, Italy, Portugal, and the wider region.

"The demand in Southern Europe for cost-effective, highly adaptable power equipment is growing rapidly," noted a Chinese exhibitor with years of experience at the event. "This aligns perfectly with the product strengths and market positioning of SMEs like ours." As the energy transition deepens, local demand is becoming not only voluminous but also increasingly diverse. Standardized offerings from large corporations often struggle to meet the needs of specific, niche applications – creating an opening for agile Chinese SMEs.

A Zhejiang-based exhibitor offered an analogy: "We operate like 'bespoke ateliers for power equipment.' If a client has a specific requirement, we can react swiftly, adjusting the design promptly until it meets their exact needs." This "highly customized" service made them a sought-after partner on the show floor.

This rapid response capability is particularly valued in the Southern European market. A procurement manager from a Spanish engineering company confirmed: "Compared to larger suppliers, Chinese SMEs are far more willing to accommodate our special requests, and their lead times are shorter, which is crucial for keeping our projects on track."

Technical Innovation in Chinese Lighting Products Gains European Recognition

At the exhibition, Made-in-China.com showcased samples and promotional materials from numerous member suppliers, drawing consistent crowds to its booth. A Zhejiang-based LED manufacturer generated significant interest with their ruggedized lamps, which captivated professional buyers with features like adjustable color temperature and power, coupled with their novel design.

"European clients used to focus more on price, but now they place greater emphasis on technical sophistication and compliance," shared a Made-in-China.com member supplier. "Our entire product series showcased here was pre-emptively upgraded for energy efficiency, demonstrating to European buyers the forward-thinking approach of Chinese companies."

Resilient Chinese Supply Chain Earns Buyer Trust

A key observation from the event was a shift in how many European buyers perceive Chinese products. "We have to acknowledge that the completeness of the Chinese supply chain and its responsiveness remain unmatched," stated a local Spanish purchaser. "Especially for customized products and smart solutions, Chinese companies can provide end-to-end service from R&D to manufacturing."

Notably, some Chinese firms are now establishing logistics hubs within Europe. A representative from a Guangdong-based exhibitor revealed, "We have set up a regional warehouse in Poland, enabling delivery to major European markets within seven days. This localized service capability effectively alleviates client concerns about supply chain stability."

AI + Cultural Innovation: Tech-Powered Brand Engagement

A highlight of the Made-in-China.com booth was the "AI Horse-Face Skirt Face-Swap" experience. Participants simply took a photo, and AI technology digitally "dressed" them in an exquisite traditional Chinese Horse-Face Skirt, generating a personalized digital photo. This innovative interactive activity not only attracted long queues of young visitors but also sparked a wave of sharing on social media.

Complementing this was the "Chinese Lucky Pouches" campaign, which combined written well-wishes with traditional silk pouches, creating a unique cultural ambiance within the professional setting. "These activities made the serious business of exhibition networking lively and fun," remarked a Chilean buyer. "It allowed us to experience Chinese culture while learning about the products."
