In the next five years, Qatar government plans to invest 40 billion U.S. dollars for sustainable energy development. As one of the sustainable energies, solar energy has been listed in to national development strategy in Qatar.
In Qatar, power plants generate a total capacity of 8,750MW, while in 2013, electricity consumption was 6,000MW. According to Kaharamaa, the state grid corporation of Qatar, due to a rapid increase of industry and economy and population expansion, in 2020, domestic power demand will reach 8,700MW. Considering that, Qatar government decides to achieve the solar energy production capacity of 1.8GW by 2020. Seeking environmental-friendly renewable energy is not only an innovation for Qatar, but also a common strategy for the whole middle east area and even for all the other countries in the world. Qatar government has made huge endowment in this respect.
Based on the principle of reducing the reliability on energy and creating modern knowledge-based economies by further constructing sustainable development environment, Qatar Food Safety Authority has completely realized that 40% of the domestic food supply has to be produced in the most economic and sustainable way. This also means the challenges lie ahead are large and hard. For example, problems like Irrigation water and food cold storage; power demand for these two is estimated about 750MW to 800MW. There’s no doubt that Qatar Food Safety Authority is at the forefront of using renewable energy - by making use of the rich domestic resource of solar energy for sea water desalinization, Qatar can not only increase the ability for water desalinization but also raise the agriculture production.
Qatar has made a 200MW solar power project and planned to have solar energy pilot program. As electricity and water supply monopolist, Kahramaa is the first enterprise in this program. In December, 2012, Qatar government announced that the 200MW project will be achieved by 2020 during the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Doha. Many of the ongoing projects has witnessed the efforts that Qatar government has made to promote the solar energy industry. One of the major projects is the solar resource map, led by Qatar Food Safety Authority. This project is implemented by DLR, mainly analyzing and studying on the solar radiation and solar energy potential in Qatar. Another project is the solar energy test equipment located at Qatar Science & Technology Park. Co-sponsored by Green Bay and Chevron Corporation, this equipment covers an area of 35,000㎡ and is mainly used for testing solar photoelectricity and solar heating system to find the most suitable solar energy technology for Qatar.
After awarded the 2020 World Cup, Qatar Committee plans to introduce all kinds of high technology and fully utilize renewable natural resources to host the 2020 World Cup as a green and environmental-friendly competition, which includes to use solar cooling in all the sports venues. Meanwhile,a new energy department has been established in Qatar General Petroleum Corporation, devoting to promote the renewable energy and nuclear power strategy.
As a multinational clean energy company and the world’s biggest thin-film solar power company, Henergy Holding Group sees the great potential in Qatar market and eagerly to participate in the Made in China Exhibition 2015. With Henergy, clean energy will be used in Qatar as its most for solar-photovoltaic power station, transportation, and daily life. It’s not only good for energy saving and emission reduction, but also a way with all the efforts to present the best venue for FIFA fans from the world.
